Becky Matheny

Reverend Becky Matheny, Pastor of Spiritual/Communal Development, grew up in Alabama. She graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, with a BA in Music Education and earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Becky has served churches in Alabama, Kentucky, and Georgia. She was ordained to the ministry in 1978 at First Baptist Church, Thorsby, Alabama, and was the first Baptist woman ordained in the state.

After seminary, she was called to be Campus Minister at the University of Georgia from 1978 through 2008 and served both the student and faculty UGA community.

She left UGA to spend time with her family and also founded “Baptist Heritage,” a state-wide, non-profit organization, with the goal of educating people and supporting the efforts of moderate Baptists throughout the entire state of Georgia.

Becky then served for five years as Minister of Education at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta, working with the church’s families and senior Adults.

Becky is married to architect, David Matheny. They have two girls, Leigh Ellen and Mary Catherine.

Becky came to LOCC as Pastor of Spiritual and Communal Development in 2007, and works with all aspects of education, pastoral care, and community life.
